Back in 2019, in the Beforetimes, I wrote a new novella, which you old-timers have heard me mention from time to time. It was a continuation of my short “Night Driving,” which is featured in Women’s Work, the two-story book I’ve been giving away to new mailing list subscribers for the last several years. So there’s a good chance you’ve read it.
I was inspired to turn Mae’s story into a series of novellas, an urban fantasy/horror series depicting my ideas of angelic warfare. The plan was to release each novella individually on Kindle Unlimited, and then to collect a few novellas at a time into novel-length volumes.
And then the year changed over and stuff happened and the whole project got derailed. In the intervening years, I wrote the rest of my post-apocalyptic vampire/zombie trilogy and took an experimental detour into Christian romance, all the while thinking about Mae and her story and itching to get back to telling it.
And I finally am. It actually worked out that I had to put it on the back burner for so long, because it wasn’t until 2020 that I discovered Dr. Michael Heiser and read Unseen Realm, which started my whole journey into hugely expanding my supernatural worldview and my understanding of what’s going on behind the veil of our reality. I’ll be writing more about that subject here, but for now, suffice to say that it’s so much more than I thought when I started this book.
So with the first novella written and mostly polished, the new plan is to publish it here on Substack (and in your inbox, if you’re a subscriber) in serial format, with new chapters dropping twice a week. If it’s well received, then I’ll continue the series.
With that long introduction out of the way, here’s a teaser for Flesh and Blood:
When Mae Bishop finally did in her abusive husband and dumped his body in the river, she thought her troubles were behind her. When his ghost shows up and leads her away from the police and straight into the lair of a serial killer, she realizes trouble never left. And when a mysterious angelic being recruits her for purposes yet unknown, Mae knows she and trouble are in it for the long haul.
Coming soon. Probably next week.
Later this week, I’ll also be posting another short story — “The Box,” the other entry from Women’s Work. Since all of my subscribers who were carried over from MailerLite or Mailchimp got that book as their subscriber freebie, I won’t be pushing it out to email. But if you missed it and want to read it, you can check the website and read it there.
Before I go, some housekeeping:
You might not be familiar with Substack. It’s more than just a newsletter engine — it’s a hosting and publishing platform with built in community tools that provide you with multiple ways to interact with me, and even for you guys to interact with each other:
As always, you can just reply to each email that lands in your inbox and it will make its way to my email.
You can also click the comment buttons embedded in each email to leave a public comment, or see what others are saying.
You can also like and share posts to help me gain visibility.
You can follow me on Notes, which is sort of Substack’s (much more sane) answer to Twitter, and interact with me there.
There’s also Chat, which I haven’t yet turned on for this publication, but when I do, it will enable us to start private, subscriber-only discussion threads. You’ll get an announcement sent to your inbox when I launch that feature.
You can do all of this by going to the publication website, or to Substack.com, or you can do it all in the app (I’m a little addicted to the app).
I hope to see you there!
