I guess I’d better get my May update out before we run out of May. How is it almost June already?!
I’m still struggling to find my groove. It’s a busy season, with people wanting to get together and go places and do things in addition to the usual juggling of the property improvement and maintenance with the writing and the working and the lifing. BUT! I’ve had a busy few weeks in which I knocked a few things out, and I want to tell you about them.
This first item will only be of interest to my small niche of readers who are also writers, but I’ve relaunched my freelance editing business! I went the whole nine yards and created a website for it and everything. And I’m all caught up on editing projects and taking new clients for the summer. If you’re a Christian who writes fiction or non-fiction that’s not necessarily intended for Christian audiences or that tackles blurry subjects that tend to make mainstream Christianity a bit itchy, check it out. I know I’m narrowing myself to a super-specific niche, but this is where I feel led to focus. So whether you need a full-blown edit or just helpful feedback from a professional eye, I’d love to take a look at your work.
The other thing is a short story that’s coming to you on June 1st!
I wrote this for Vanessa Perry’s Folklore Fiction Project, which challenged us to write speculative fiction inspired by our local folklore. In Howl, two men belonging to the post-Civil War Missouri vigilante group known as the Bald Knobbers encounter a prominent Ozark cryptid (it’s not Bigfoot). It’s a mashup of western, historical folk horror, and straight-up monster horror and I can’t wait for you to read it. Watch for it on Monday, and keep an eye on Vanessa’s substack, Mythmount Press, where she’ll be posting a list of all of the participants’ stories.
The other things I knocked out were the aforementioned editing projects, which I actually can’t say much about because they’re not mine but will be thrilled to tell you all about them when they’re published. Since finishing all of that, I’ve been enjoying a break, which I’ve spent mostly working on a sewing project while binging craft videos on YouTube. And I’m now having to fight the ADHD urge to start my own craft vlog. I don’t really want to fight it, but the reality is that this is a bad time for that and it’s not really feasible with our current living situation. But it is on the list of future possibilities to explore!
At any rate, I’m still technically on my break, so I’m going to send this out to you and get back to my sewing and craft binging. See you back here next month!
PS - Big thanks to everyone who bought paperback copies of Sleep, Dearie, Sleep! Those are harder to track than Kindle books so it was a nice surprise when I got that sales report. Y’all made my month. ❤️
