Weekly Update: I'm Included in an Anthology! Plus the Based Book Sale, Ebook Giveaways and a Nostalgic Drabble
Welcome to Through a Glass, Darkly’s weekly(ish) update!
I’m on Day 8 of the flu (my poor husband’s on day 9), which means this hasn’t been a very productive week. It’s been years — probably more like decades — since I’ve had the actual, full-blown flu, and I’d forgotten how brutal it is. I’m so glad to be past the fever, chills and body aches stage, but now we’re both in the extreme fatigue stage, and that’s got its own challenges. I’m happy to say that I’ve got a modicum of energy today, though, and I’ve got a few things to share with you while I’m able to remain upright.
I’ve Been Accepted for Ripples in Space!
At the start of the year, I decided to set a goal of getting published in an anthology, and I’m completely flabbergasted that I succeeded on my very first attempt. Not only that, but the acceptance letter said that my story was easily among the top three out of more than 100 submissions. WHAT?!
I wrote my short story Out of Silence specifically to submit to this anthology, which is a scifi anthology that centers around the theme of First Contact. This was my first attempt at real scifi set in space, although I remained firmly in my horror/suspense wheelhouse. When you read it, I’m sure you’ll recognize various nods to all the ‘80s scifi-horror movies I drew inspiration from.
I don’t have a publication date yet, but I’ll announce it here when I do. I can’t wait for it to be out in the world!

Extend Time to Read These Short Serials
Thanks to getting sick, I just don’t have the energy right now to go through and change the paywall settings on these serials like I’d planned. So free subscribers have an extension on time to read the following stories for free here on Substack.
Terror at Lake Eucha
Something lingers in the woods of Lake Eucha... something that refuses to be forgotten.
The Hag: Navigation Page
Terrifying visions haunt a man as he lies paralyzed in his bed, causing him to question everything he knows about the world, his own sanity, and even his wife. A multi-part horror novella.
The Witch in the Cellar - Part One
A young boy and his family move into a house that's the subject of a local urban legend. Is the neighbor boy just making up stories... or is the legend true, and truly dangerous?
Farewell Drabble
I’ve been experimenting with Reels on Instagram, and also trying to get creative about finding new ears for my husband’s newest electronica track. So the other day when I came out of my flu fog for a few hours, I wrote a drabble — that’s a 100-word short story — inspired by his track and then built this Reel around it. I’m pretty pleased with how it turned out, and I hope you enjoy it. (You can click that link right up there to go and hear the full track!)
In Case You Missed It…
I posted chapters 13 through 16 of Desolation this week. If they got lost in your inbox, you can find all of the chapters posted so far here on the navigation page.
That’s all for this week. Four more chapters of Desolation will be coming your way next week, so stay tuned!
Congratulations, Jean!!! We're all in good company. I'm excited to read your story.
That's amazing news! Congratulations!
