Weekly Update: Desolation Post-Mortem, a Sneak Peek at Daughters of Men, and a Huge Book Sale!
Welcome to Through a Glass, Darkly’s weekly(ish) update!
Through a Glass, Darkly is the fiction publication of horror and supernatural thriller author Jean Marie Bauhaus (that’s me!), where I’m publishing my new fiction for you to read free for a limited time before it makes it into book form (paid subscribers can access all the fiction I post here all the time and read at their leisure). If you’re new here, first, HI! Second, check out the About page and the Roadmap to learn more, and go here to update your subscription preferences.
What you’re reading now is my semi-regular weekly newsletter.
Happy Friday the 13th!
Unless you’re a triskaidekaphobe, in which case, it’ll be okay. We’ll get through this and it will be over soon. Hang in there.
So this week brought us the conclusion of Desolation, which ended on a hopeful note and maybe a bit of a mild cliffhanger. Which is funny, because when I wrote it way back in 2010-2011, I had every intention of leaving it as a standalone. The hopeful note was intentional. The cliffhanger part was inadvertent, and I didn’t realize what I had done until readers kept saying things like, “I can’t wait for the sequel!” in their reviews.
It took me a long time to get around to it, but eventually I wrote the sequel, and then rounded it out into a trilogy. And I think those books were better for the waiting, as I was a much more seasoned writer (not to mention a more wizened human) by the time I got to them. I promoted some very minor characters from the first book into major characters and made it into more of a true ensemble with interweaving plots, though Hannah and Alek remain at the center.
Personally, I think those latter books are better, and much more enjoyable. I may or may not share them here at some point in the future, but if you happen to be clamoring to read the continuation right away, you can get those books here.
HOWEVER! Starting Wednesday, June 18th, you’ll be able to grab them both (along with every other fiction book I’ve written) for 99 cents each as part of the Based Book Summer Sale! So mark your calendars and be sure to sign up to the Based Book Sale newsletter so you’ll be notified when the sale begins.
Daughters of Men coming in 10 days!
That means you’ve got 10 days to catch up with Flesh and Blood, season one of my Sons of God series, which is plenty of time.
Season two picks up with Mae fleeing to the Windy City after making a deal with the mysterious and otherworldly entity she not so affectionately calls Ziggy, with Special Agent Chance Davies in hot pursuit. With only the ghost of her late husband to guide her — you know, the one she killed in self-defense before dumping his body and getting out of Dodge — she wastes no time making new enemies, and a precious few friends, as she works to untangle the web she’s gotten herself into and discovers just what, exactly, Ziggy wants her for.
Editing/Copy Writing Giveaway for Indie Authors (Enter All Month Long)!
Attention fellow indie authors! Over on Self-Publishing for the Broke Author, I’m running a giveaway for my subscribers. Two winners will be chosen by random at the end of the month to receive their choice of a free rewrite of their book’s About copy OR a free critique and edit of their book’s first five pages.
If you’d like to get in on that action, all you have to do is subscribe to Broke Author and leave a comment on this post to let me know you wish to enter.
That’s all for this week’s update. Next week, watch for a brand new short story on Monday, and the Substack debut of my husband’s newest track on Tuesday.
Until next time!
