Welcome to Through a Glass, Darkly’s weekly(ish) update!
Through a Glass, Darkly is the fiction publication of horror and supernatural thriller author Jean Marie Bauhaus (that’s me!), where I’m publishing my new fiction for you to read free for a limited time before it makes it into book form (paid subscribers can access all the fiction I post here all the time and read at their leisure). If you’re new here, first, HI! Second, check out the About page and the Roadmap to learn more, and go here to update your subscription preferences.
What you’re reading now is my semi-regular weekly newsletter.
Howdy, folks!
Things really hit the fan in this week’s installments of Desolation. I hope you’ve been enjoying this ride, and that you’ll feel more satisfied than sad as it comes to an end with next week’s final installments. But if it leaves you eager to know what happens next, you can dive right into the sequel, Evolution, available wherever ebooks are sold.
With Desolation winding down, I’ve been busy prepping for what’s next. I’ve got a flash fiction prepared for the following week — something short and not too harrowing to let everyone catch their breath — and then the week after that, at long last, Sons of God Season Two: Daughters of Men will kick off.
This is the point where things may get a little bumpy. Up until now, I’ve mainly been posting novels and stories from my back catalogue, written years ago and already published in book form. The exceptions, Sleep Dearie Sleep and Candy Crush, both of which were written especially for this publication, were still written and polished weeks before they saw the light of day in your inbox.
While I’ve got three episodes of Daughters of Men in the can ready to go (and most of the fourth), something tells me that life is going to catch up and keep me from staying as far ahead as I’d like. There’s even a possibility that it will catch up all the way and I’ll be writing the rest of the season and posting it as I go.
This is a little scary for me, but it’s also exciting. Exciting because it reminds me of back in the day when I wrote fan fiction, and it was exhilarating to be able to post a new chapter as soon as I finished it, knowing there were fans waiting with bated breath to read it, and having the feedback immediately start rolling in. That kept me motivated to keep writing, to say the least.
But it’s scary because I’ve gotten used to that safety net of having something pre-written and not having to make myself write to a schedule. I wasn’t very good at that back in my fanfic days, but my readers were patient and understanding, knowing that I was juggling school with writing.
Honestly, I don’t expect to be much better at it these days, as I’m not only juggling my fiction with my day job and my adult responsibilities and our efforts to build a homestead (and also this new venture that I hope to be able to tell you about soon), but also chronic illness that sometimes keeps me from being able to write even when I have the time.
So consider this a warning that new episodes of this series might not show up in your inbox as regularly as you’re used to. Although I’ll strive to be consistent and regular, I hope you’ll be patient with me as I work to get each new episode out as quickly as I can without sacrificing quality, and understanding when that means an episode is a few days late, or if I need to take a week off here and there to deal with life.
In any case, I’m excited to enter this new phase of this journey with you. This Sons of God serial project is special to me, and although I know that not everyone gets it, I hope it will be to you, too.

Attention fellow indie authors! Over on Self-Publishing for the Broke Author, I’m running a giveaway for my subscribers. If you’d like to get in on that action, all you have to do is subscribe to Broke Author and leave a comment on this post to let me know you wish to enter.
The Summer Based Book Sale is Coming!
As much as it helps my bottom line when you pay full price for my books, I understand that sometimes that’s a challenge. So I would feel remiss if I didn’t give you a heads up that I’m going to be putting ALL of my books on sale for 99 cents each during the Based Book Sale’s upcoming summer event, beginning June 18th.
This might be the last time I participate in this sale. Considering I only get to keep about 23 cents for every 99 cent book sold, it’s only really worth it if it results in a high volume of sales and new readers converting to fans. My books performed well in the first such sale I took part in, but as the sale has grown in popularity and participation (meaning more competition), my returns have been dwindling and I’m not sure it’s worth it anymore. But if this is my last Based Sale hurrah, then I’m going out with a bang, putting my entire catalogue out there. So be ready!
Extended Time to Read The Hag
I finally made time to paywall my serialized shorts Terror at Lake Eucha and The Witch in the Cellar. That just leaves The Hag, which I’m planning to get around to next week.
This is a reminder that a paid subscription will get you full access to the fiction archives, which will only grow over time as I add published stories that age out of free circulation. And also that, in lieu of subscribing to read my published works, you can always just buy the books.
The Hag: Navigation Page
Terrifying visions haunt a man as he lies paralyzed in his bed, causing him to question everything he knows about the world, his own sanity, and even his wife. A multi-part horror novella.
New Cover Reveal!
Speaking of The Witch in the Cellar, it has a new cover! Grok this:
Okie doke, that’s all for this week. Watch for the final four chapters of Desolation to land in your inbox next week.
Until next time!
Wow, you've been busy! It's exciting to see all of these creative (and "real life") projects you have going. Kudos for all the hard work you're doing.
